If you’re under 50 and looking to retire early in Southeast Asia, you’ve probably come across the Philippines’ Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV). But is it still available to younger retirees? Here’s what you need to know in 2025.
The SRRV Smile Category, which previously allowed foreigners aged 35 to 49 to retire in the Philippines with a US$20,000 visa deposit, has not yet been reinstated. This category was suspended in 2020 during the pandemic and, unlike other SRRV categories, has remained inactive even after most immigration processes resumed.
In early 2025, multiple sources began spreading that the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) is considering a new SRRV category for foreign retirees aged 40 and above. The rumored category may require a higher visa deposit of around US$30,000, aimed at attracting early retirees who want to settle long-term in the Philippines.
While there is no official announcement yet, discussions appear to be progressing.
During the 281st Regular Board Meeting of the PRA on April 30, 2025, attended by Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, the PRA confirmed discussions around expanding the SRRV program.
"PRA General Manager Roberto “Bob” Zozobrado presented several key agenda items during the meeting, including the proposed expansion of the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) Program and amendments to the PRA Accreditation System. He also discussed other operational and policy updates designed to support the agency’s long-term objectives and enhance service delivery amid the evolving global concept of retirement, which is no longer limited to age, as many career-oriented individuals are now seen to retire early—often to pursue travel, launch new business ventures, among others."
While the updated SRRV for younger retirees hasn’t launched yet, you can begin preparing key documents that are required for most SRRV categories:
Completed PRA Application Form
Valid Medical Certificate (issued within 6 months)
Valid Police Clearance or Background Check (issued within 6 months)
2x2 photos with white background
Original valid passport
